There isn't a right or wrong answer.

Some actors suit a warm, approachable smile. Others create a stronger impression with a more neutral expression. The most important thing is that your expression feels genuine and reflects the kinds of roles you're naturally suited to.

As actors, it's easy to overthink expressions. We start "acting" for the camera rather than simply being present. Ironically, the most successful headshots are often the ones where you're not trying too hard.

Think about the roles you naturally play. If you're often cast as the friendly teacher, supportive parent or upbeat colleague, a softer expression might feel right. If your casting leans towards detectives, lawyers or dramatic roles, a more neutral look may suit you better.

That said, you don't need to choose just one expression. During a session we'll naturally create a range of looks, giving you options for different submissions and casting opportunities.

The best expression is the one that feels believable. Casting directors aren't looking for perfection, they're looking for authenticity. Your headshot should feel like the person they'll meet when you walk into the room.

If you spend your session worrying about whether you should smile, you're focusing on the wrong thing. Relax, enjoy the process and let your personality come through naturally. That's where the strongest images are made.
