So, you've finished your headshot session, your gallery has arrived, and now comes what many actors find to be the hardest part….choosing your final images.

It's completely normal to have a favourite photo. But before you make your final decision, try looking at your gallery through the eyes of a casting director rather than your own.

Choose the image that looks most like you

This is always my first piece of advice.

Your favourite image isn't always the strongest choice. Instead, ask yourself:

"If I walked into an audition tomorrow, would they immediately recognise me from this headshot?"

If the answer is yes, you're on the right track.

Think about your casting

Every actor has a natural casting range, and your headshots should support it.

Rather than choosing the image where you think you look the most attractive, choose the one that best represents the roles you're most likely to be considered for.

Remember, your headshot isn't there to convince people you can play every role. It's there to help the right people imagine you in the right roles.

Less is often more

A subtle expression is often far more powerful than a dramatic one.

Casting directors don't need to see a performance in your headshot. They want to see a real person with personality, confidence and authenticity.

The strongest images often feel effortless.

Don't choose alone

If you're struggling to decide, ask for a second opinion.

An acting coach, agent, trusted friend or fellow actor may notice something you've overlooked. They can often tell you which image feels the most natural and representative of who you are. I always offer to help narrow them down, as having the perspective of an outsider can be very useful.

Just be careful not to ask too many people. Ten different opinions usually lead to more confusion than clarity.

Trust your instincts

There will often be one or two images that simply feel right.

If you find yourself coming back to the same photograph every time you look through your gallery, there's usually a reason.

Give yourself a day or two before making your final decision. Looking at your images with fresh eyes can make the choice much easier.

Your headshot is more than just a nice photograph, it's a professional tool that represents you before you've even stepped into the audition room.

Choose the images that feel honest, current and unmistakably you.

The best headshots aren't always the ones that make you look your best. They're the ones that make casting directors feel like they've already met you.
