Choosing what to wear for your actor headshots can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. The goal isn't to wear your favourite outfit or the latest fashion, it's to wear clothing that helps casting directors focus on you.

A great actor headshot should look authentic. When someone views your headshot on Spotlight, receives it from your agent, or sees it as part of a casting submission, they should immediately get a sense of who you are and the types of roles you could play. Your clothing should support that impression, not distract from it.

Keep it simple

Solid colours are usually the safest choice. Avoid large logos, bold graphics and busy patterns, as these can draw attention away from your face.

Neutral tones such as navy, grey, olive, black and earthy colours tend to photograph well, but don't be afraid to bring colours that suit your complexion and personality. Your headshot is about you, not your clothes. The aim is to make you memorable, not your outfit.

Dress for your casting range

Think about the roles you're most likely to be cast in. You don't need costumes, but subtle wardrobe choices can help suggest different characters. A smart shirt or jacket creates a different feel from a casual knit or T-shirt. Small changes between outfits can create a versatile portfolio without looking staged. Don't rely solely on your own perception of your casting type. Ask friends, family, acting coaches or colleagues how they see you. You might be surprised by the answers.

I've been guilty of this myself. For a long time, I convinced myself that my casting was one thing, and in doing so I limited the opportunities I put myself forward for. Sometimes the people around us see strengths and possibilities that we overlook.

Bring a selection of outfits

I always recommend bringing a few different options to your session. Having a variety of tops, jackets and layers allows us to create different looks throughout the shoot and gives you more choice when selecting your final images. Just remember to avoid anything that can be distracting. Bring more than you think you'll need. It's much easier to leave an outfit on the rail than wish you'd packed it.

Wear something that feels like you

The best headshots look natural. If you rarely wear a suit, don't feel you need to wear one for your session. Choose clothing that feels comfortable and reflects who you are, while still presenting you professionally.

If you're comfortable, you're far more likely to relax in front of the camera, and that always shows in the final images.

Simple, well-fitting clothing that complements your natural appearance will always create stronger images than something chosen simply because it's fashionable.
